SEASON AUDITIONS

Theatre 29 2024 - 25 Season Auditions

WELCOME!

For those of you who are familiar with Theatre 29's casting methods of the past, this is wholly new!  We inaugurated an annual casting call last season, in addition to our normal per production auditions which will still occur, on average, seven weeks prior to the opening of its production run.  This casting call is different in that it is for consideration of all casting directors for all season projects, all at once.

The casting procedure is also changing.  Each auditioner will perform for the casting directors only, no audience of fellow auditioners to distract or make self conscious.

All participants will need to pre-register at an electronic form accessible by click the "REGISTER" button to the right here.  It only takes a few moments to complete and saves a lot of time later!  Once you have received confirmation of your registration having been completed (both by email and text), you will be contacted for an opportunity to submit your headshots, resumes and (for musical auditions) the music track you will wish to audition with.

In preparation for your audition, please observe the following:

MUSICAL AUDITIONS

  • Provide recorded accompaniment of between 12-16 bars of two contrasting songs (usually a full verse of a standard Broadway song).  Contrasting means playing opposite themes i.e. A Ballad and a Up Tempo song.  Recorded accompaniment can be karaoke, piano recording or professional backing track.  Please, no background vocals.
  • If you are auditioning for a specific lead role, be familiar with the style of music that character sings and prepare music that would show your ability to pull their music off.  Don't prepare a song just because you like it, particularly if the piece will not show off your vocal range.  This isn't a performance, it is an audition to get you to performance.
  • Do NOT prepare original music (ie you wrote it).  The Casting Directors will not gain anything by hearing it, because they will have no idea how it is supposed to sound!
  • Each musical auditioner will also need to prepare a monologue - 60 to 90 seconds.  Comedic, Dramatic or Serio-dramatic (meaning a bit of both) pieces depending on the show you are auditioning for.  As this is a newer skill for many newer actors in our area, printed monologue text will be allowed on stage during performance (but please prepare as much as possible so you are "buried" in the paper!)  A cold read may also be employed with a casting panel member.

NON-MUSICAL AUDITIONS

  • Each non-musical auditioner will need to prepare a monologue - 60 to 90 seconds.
  • If you are auditioning for a show that would utilize an accent or verbal affectation (British, Spanish, European, etc), use it!

Once you have completed your audition, you will be contacted by the casting director if they have you in mind for a specific role and you will be called back at the regular show audition date.  You will NOT have to audition again at that point, though you would be utilized in cold read and movement exercises with the other potentials cast members.  Official casting is normally done at the end of that audition process.  It is also possible that a casting director may pre-cast you for a role on the spot.  It depends on a lot of factors.
