WE REVIEW "BLESS ME FATHER" AT THEATRE 29
Tami Roleff - KCDZ 107.7FM
The delightful holiday Comedy, "Bless me Father" opened last weekend for a five-week run at Theatre 29. Managing Editor Tami Roleff was there opening night and offers this review of the production… Theatre 29's latest production is Bless Me, Father, a divine comedy about an Irish country priest, Father Pat, who suddenly takes ill. While the janitor John Paul Fitzpatrick is cleaning up the mess he is accidentally locked into the confessional. To make matters worse, there is a rumor that the pope, who is touring nearby, may hear confessions at the church that very afternoon. But the only John Paul in the confessional box is Fitz the janitor. Fitz puts a new spin on confession and penance, and his penances change the lives of his fellow villagers. Cheryl Gillon, has chosen an experienced cast for her directorial debut at Theatre 29. Talking with excellent Irish brogues are John Wright as Father Pat, Alex Gomez as Fitz the janitor, and Cathy Inscore, who sparkles as Beulah Ravenscroft, the housekeeper. Patti Brown brightens the stage as the town harlot in her scarlet outfit. Other Theatre 29 veterans are Adam Redmon as Farris, Mary Phelps as the Butcher's Wife, Kit Brooks as the Widow Delaney, and Tara Henkel as the Irish Angel. And not to be forgotten is Nena Jimenez as sweet young Shannon Bitterwahl, who just wants some pink shoelaces. There are some genuinely funny lines, and the set is fabulous.
"Bless Me, Father" takes the Theatre 29 stage 7:00 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays through December 17, with a Thursday performance December 1st, and a Sunday matinee December 11. Tickets for "Bless Me Father" are $8-$12 and are available now through the Theatre 29 Web site: theatre29.org, or by calling the box office at (760) 361-4151.
CASTING COMPLETED FOR "BLESS ME FATHER" AT THEATRE 29 Casting for the final production of Theatre 29s 2011 season, the divine comedy written by T.A. Powell, "Bless Me Father" has been announced by Director Cheryl Gillon. The show will take the stage for five weeks beginning Friday, November 18th, and run through Saturday, December 17th. Helmed by Theatre 29 veteran Cheryl Gillon, she is making her directorial debut assisted by another Theatre 29 veteran, the gifted and exceptional Diane Durden. .
"Bless Me Father" tells the story of a country priest named Father Pat who is rehearsing his Sunday sermon when he suddenly takes ill from eating a spoiled liver mousse pate from the church fridge. After he voids himself of the mousse in the confessional box, the vicarage housekeeper harangues the janitor Fitz, to clean up the mess. The overzealous housekeeper, in a hurry to make her way to the market to gossip and get soda crackers for the ailing priest, accidentally locks the janitor inside the confessional box. To make matters worse, there is a rumor being spread that the pope's European tour will bring him remarkably close to the small village church and that there is an off-chance that the Holy Father himself will hear confession that very afternoon. Rumors quickly fly down at the butcher shop that the Pope is filling in for the ailing priest, and parishioners make haste to have their confessions heard by the Holy Father. But the only John Paul in the confessional box is (of course) John Paul Fitzpatrick, the janitor. Fitz has been trapped in there for hours, and what he is hearing could blow the lid off this whole town! Frustrated from continually hearing confessions, Fitz decides to declare war on the idiots that continue to confess! He begins doling out penance with a punch line, as he cleans up a lot more than mousse! This ingenious and hilarious Christmas comedy will leave your audiences clutching their sides and believing that "on one day of the year it's possible to get more than we deserve". Cast in the role of the unfortunate janitor Fitz is Theatre 29's illustrious Alex Gomez. Father Pat will be played by the experienced John Wright, while the overzealous housekeeper Beulah will be played by the skilled Cathy Inscore. Kit Brooks returns to Theatre29 after several years on hiatus as the Widow Delaney, Fitz's love interest. Rounding out the cast are Mary Phelps, as Roberta, the Butcher's wife, Patty Brown, as Germaine, the village harlot, Adam Redmon, as Farris, the young man in love, Nena Jimenez as Shannon, a little scamp, and Tara Henkel, our Irish Angel. Boasting a cast of talented, veteran performers, "Bless Me Father" promises to entertain audiences with its humor, wit, and sentiment. It is a show guaranteed to afford laughs to all ages. "Bless Me Father" will run weekends beginning November 18th through December 17th, 2011, with performances beginning at 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. GENDER TWIST DELIGHTING AUDIENCES OF “NUNSENSE A-MEN” AT THEATRE 29
The latest musical Comedy offering at Theatre 29 is the classic original of the “Nunsense” series of seven shows by Dan Goggin, all of them revolving around the nuns of “The Little sisters of Hobeken”. The latest version. Directed by the multi-talented, award winning Director Kathryn Ferguson, is actually the very first of the Nunsense franchise with a big twist, the five nuns are played by…..men! Ferguson says it is remarkable how fast the audience completely forgets the gender change and get swept up the fun. “Audiences are loving the "twist" this show has” she remarked, chuckling, “After a while, their suspension of disbelief kicks in and they are just watching nuns on stage.” Adding, “ These sisters rock! It has been a lot of fun and everyone has worked extremely hard to make this happen. Every night, the show is different and exciting. You can't catch all of it in one viewing!” In “Nunsense A-men”, the Little Sisters of Hoboken put on a talent show to raise money to bury four deceased sisters, currently residing in the convent freezer, due to a culinary incident. They sing, dance, patter, flatter, tease, instruct and joke their ways into the hearts of the audience. The five nuns are played by some of the top male talent in the region, actors Kurt Schauppner, Faraimo Fuifui, Charles Harvey, Jericho McWilliams, and Chris Fleischman. “Nunsense A-Men” will run weekends beginning August 26th through September 24th, 2011, with performances beginning at 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. The Fall production of the Theatre 29 2011 season, the ecumenical musical comedy smash, “Nunsense A-Men!”, will take the stage for five weeks beginning August 26th through September 24th.
The musical, the seventh show of the extremely popular “Nunsense” franchise, is helmed by the veteran production team of Director and Musical Director, Kathryn Ferguson and Assistant Director Marty Neider. “Nunsense A-Men!” with Book, Music and Lyrics by Dan Goggin, has become an international sensation.
The show, for those who are familiar with the “Nunsense” shows, is the same story as the original production, but with a twist! The Little Sisters of Hoboken put on a talent show to raise money to bury four deceased sisters, currently residing in the convent freezer, due to a culinary incident. They sing, dance, patter, flatter, tease, instruct and joke their ways into the hearts of the audience. The twist, here, is that all the nuns are played by men!
Cast in the role of Reverend Mother, Sister Mary Regina, is Kurt Schauppner, fresh from his role as Lycus in “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum”. Second in command, “Mistress of Novices”, Sister Mary Hubert, is portrayed by Faraimo Fuifui, previously seen in last year’s “25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee”. Â “Street Smart” Brooklyn-ite with a nose for trouble, Sister Robert Anne, is played by Charles Harvey, fresh off his role as Psuedolus in “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum”. Sister Mary Amnesia, the dippy but loveable country singing nun, is Jericho McWilliams, making his Theatre 29 debut. Rounding out the cast is novice Sister Mary Leo, who dreams of being the first nun ballerina, played by Chris Fleischman, also a “Forum” alumni for his role as Hero.
Boasting a well balanced cast of veteran performers, as well as talented newcomers, this show promises to wow audiences with its humor, energy and pathos. It is important to note that, though the show has men playing women, it is not a ‘drag’ show, rather a theatrical device that allows a whole new level of comedy to erupt from the dialogue. It is a family show guaranteed to provide big laughs to all ages. “Nunsense A-Men” will run weekends beginning August 26th through September 24th, 2011, with performances beginning at 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. There also will be a Thursday performance, at 7 p.m. September 8th and a Sunday matinee, at 2:30 p.m. September 18th.

"AUDITIONS FOR "BLESS ME FATHER" AT THEATRE 29
Theatre 29 and Director Cheryl Gillon will hold open Auditions for T.A. Powell's "Bless Me Father" on the main stage at Theatre 29, Monday, September 19th, at 6 PM.
“Bless Me Father” tells the story of a country priest named Father Pat who is rehearsing his Christmas sermon when he suddenly takes ill from eating spoiled food from the church kitchen's fridge - a three week old liver mousse pâté. After he voids himself of the mousse in the confessional box, the housekeeper harangues the janitor Fitz, instructing him to clean up the mess and put up a sign postponing confessions. The overzealous vicarage housekeeper, in a hurry to make her way to the market to gossip and get soda crackers for the ailing priest, accidentally traps the janitor inside the confessional box. To make matters worse, there is a rumor being spread that the pope's European tour will bring him remarkably close to the small village church and that there is an off-chance that the Holy Father himself will be there to hear confession that very afternoon.
Rumors quickly fly down at the butcher shop that the Pope is filling in for the ailing priest, and parishioners make haste to have their confessions heard by the Holy Father. But the only John Paul in the confessional box is (of course) John Paul Fitzpatrick, the janitor. Fitz has been trapped in there for hours, and what he is learning could blow the lid off this whole town! Frustrated from continually hearing confessions, Fitz decides to declare war on those that continue to confess! He begins doling out penance with a punch line, as he cleans up a lot more than mousse! This ingenious and hilarious Christmas comedy will leave your audiences clutching their sides and believing that "on one day of the year it's possible to get more than we deserve”.
Gillon is looking for nine performers for this comedy; The Characters are:
Father Pat, very animated, portly, and self absorbed country priest.
John Paul Fitzpatrick, a.k.a "Fitz", the janitor.
Farris O'Malley, a young man in love.

“A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM“ AT THEATRE 29 IS A FAMILY AFFAIR.
The latest Blockbuster Broadway musical at Theatre 29 is a true family affair. The hilarious comedy, “A Funny thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” will run through July 30th at the Twentynine Palms non-profit Community Theater. Proving that community theatre is a true family affair, seven different family groups are involved in the big summer show, either on stage or behind the scenes! The Schmelling family of Joshua Tree are fully committed, with four family members working every performance night. Dad Marv plays bass in the lively, live, onstage band, Mom Robin watches over the Green Room area of the theater, making sure performers make their entrances and she acts as a backstage dresser, helping with some lightning fast costume changes. Daughter Lauren, already a seasoned performer at 17, is the ingénue lead as Philia and daughter Lizzie, star of “Pinocchio” earlier this year, is up in the light booth running the spotlight for the show. Both Lauren and Lizzie Schmelling are students at YuccaValleyHigh School. Director Gary Daigneault of Twentynine Palms also has a strong family connection to the show with his wife Cindy playing the part and singing as the mother in the show, Domina, and Son Cody as part of the trio of Proteans who switch parts often in this fast-paced vaudevillian send up of ancient Rome. Three tears ago, Cindy Daigneault tired of being a “Theatre Widow” every summer and joined her husband at Theatre 29 in the show “The Producers”. Son Cody Joseph, a radio personality at Z107.7, has been on the stage since he was very young and has amassed an impressive list of credits, including the male lead ,Sid Sorokin, in last years classic “The Pajama Game”. Dr. Ken Lindsay of MorongoValley and his daughter Lisa Goldberg also share the stage, with Lindsay as the “loathsome lascivious dirty old man”, “Senex” and Goldberg as the beautiful cat-like courtesan, Vibrata. The star of the show is Desert Hot Springs resident and multi-award winning actor and director Charles Harvey as Psuedolus. Joining him as the costumer and vocal coach is his wife Kathryn Ferguson, also a multi-award winner as an actress, director, and costume designer. Butch Pelfrey, a retired U.S. Marine, lends his talents to the show as the co-set designer and builder while his wife Jackie brought in her magic paint brushes to help bring life to the shows stunning period sets. The Pelfreys make their home in Twentynine Palms. John and Francis Wright of Twentynine Palms have also made “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” at Theatre 29 a family affair. Francis as the Lighting Designer and technician and John, a former member of the U.S. Navy and a Copper Mountain College student, helping out cueing lines at rehearsals. Another family effort is Tom and Paulette Highfill of Twentynine Palms. Tom, another retired U.S. Marine, helped with the sets and wired in a unique closed circuit cable TV system that allows the actors to monitor the stage from three different points backstage and in the lobby. Paulette serves as the Front of House Manager and manages the Box Office operations for the Theatre 29 Organization. “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” will play Friday and Saturday nights at 7:00 p.m. through July 30th. THEATRE 29 CASTS “A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM”
Continuing a twelve year tradition, Theatre 29 is preparing for this summers blockbuster Broadway Musical. Called ‘One of the funniest musicals ever written’, “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” written by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart, with Music by Stephen Sondheim, opens July 1st for a five week run at the popular Twentynine Palms Community Theater. This will be the thirteenth major musical theater collaboration between Artistic Director Gary Daigneault and Musical Director Ed Will over the past twelve years. The two seasoned Directors and their crack production team have completed casting of the nineteen performers who will bring the Broadway classic to life on the Theatre 29 stage. In the lead role as the clever, hilarious, irascible Roman slave “Psuedolus” is Charles Harvey of Desert Hot Springs, Theatre 29 patrons know Harvey as the desert’s premier leading man with many credits to his name at theaters in the Hi and Lo deserts. His sidekick and “household slave-in chief”, “Hysterium” is played by Aaron Fagan, who just graduated with a degree in Classic Theater from the famed Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York. Fagan’s family lives in Yucca Valley and Fagan has spent his last two summer vacations on the Theatre 29 stage. Yucca Valley High School graduate Chris Fleischman, now a theater student at UCLA, plays the part of the clueless but-in-love Hero. Of interest, Fleischman played the lead role of “Psuedolus” when the same show was produced by Yucca Valley High School. Lauren Schmelling of Joshua Tree, a Student at Yucca Valley High School, plays the female lead of “Philia”, the lovely, winsome and virginal courtesan from the local house of ill repute. Schmelling has literally grown up on the local stage with appearances in many venues. The doddering, nearly blind father, “Senex” is played to the comedic hilt by local theater veteran and Morongo Valley Resident Dr. Ken Lindsay. Playing the mother in only the third show she has ever done, the multi-talented Cindy Daigneault of Twentynine Palms is the bossy and strident “Domina”, mother to Hero and wife of Senex. Another local performance veteran, Kurt Schauppner, plays the “gentleman and procurer”, “Lycus”. Schauppner is a talented actor, singer, author, playwright and screenwriter who lives in Twentynine Palms. Alex Gomez of Twentynine Palms brings his rich baritone voice and impeccable comedic timing to the part of the Roman Army Captain “Miles Gloriosus” Playing the “Proteans”, who switch from soldiers to Eunuchs to townspeople, even a boat, at a moments notice, are Cyrus Short of Twentynine Palms, Cody Daigneault of Yucca Valley, and Joshua Morris, who just graduated from Yucca Valley High School. As the denizens of Lycus’ “house of love” the “Courtesans” are Patti Brown and Sarah Hutson of Yucca Valley, Lisa Goldberg of Morongo Valley, Tara Henkel from the Twentynine Palms Marine Base, Cathy Inscore of Joshua Tree, and as both a Courtesan and the show’s Choreographer is Shelby Art, a theater student at Fresno State University. Rounding out the cast is recently retired Marine Corps Major, Keith Roleff of Yucca Valley, as Erronius, the very old man searching for his children, stolen at birth by pirates. Called Broadway’s greatest farce, “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” is light, fast-paced, witty, and irreverent. It tells the story of a crafty slave as he struggles to win the hand of a beautiful but slow-witted courtesan for his young master in exchange for his freedom. The show runs at 7:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday nights from July 1st through July 30th. A Thursday performance is set for July 14th. And a Sunday Matinee at 2:30 p.m. on July 24th. Barbecuing Hamlet" has them laughing
“Barbecuing Hamlet” is a surprise hit at Theatre 29, with audiences getting a night full of belly laughs and reviewers saying, “It’s a wonderfully funny farce, with a steady stream of laughs from start to finish.”
The Comedy, which opened May 6th and runs though June 4th, runs Friday and Saturday nights at 7:00 pm at Theatre 29 with a Thursday performance May 19th at 7:00 pm and a Sunday matinee at 2:30 pm May 29th.
“Barbecuing Hamlet” is directed by first-time Director Robin Wanless, a 20 year old student at CopperMountainCollege. Wanless said the show is so funny, even her seasoned performers had a hard time keeping a straight face, “When picking this play I never realized our toughest feat would to be to get through one rehearsal with out cracking up.”’ She said, adding, “I find it funny how close the play comes to how our community theatre actually works.” Wanless said the creative process that went into the show has brought them much closer, “This cast is becoming a family and you can really see the chemistry and relationships come to life on stage.”, she said.
The farce tells the story of a New York Director (the state, not the city) brought in to help a community theater in Texas stage the Shakespeare classic “Hamlet”. Not knowing that it had to be done as a western, complete with pre-show barbecue, and with only 8 performers! Fast, witty, well-paced dialogue, fast exits, and a goofy set of familiar characters bring the funny situations to a fever pitch.

FIRST TIME DIRECTOR FINDS KIDS LOVE “PINOCCHIO” AT THEATRE 29
When first-time director John Wright took the helm of the children’s classic show “Pinocchio” at Theatre 29, little did he know that his young actors would have to be ready for reactions not just from other performers on the stage, but also from the enthusiastic youngsters in the audience! Wright remembers the first time it happened, during a first Friday performance when they had a bunch of daisy scouts in the audience and one of them yelled out to Lizzie Schmelling (Pinocchio), "I Love You" when she was in the opening scene. Unfazed, Schmelling, already a Theatre 29 stage veteran at the ripe old age of 13, just smiled and went on with the scene. Wright tells of another time, during the carnival scene when Marv Schmelling (Geppetto) came out at the end and was asking the audience if they have seen Pinocchio. After the kids in the audience told him Pinocchio went into the tent, Geppetto goes in the opposite direction, one little girl yelled out "Your Going the Wrong Way" at the top of her little lungs. The interaction elicited a generous chuckle from the engaged audience. More delightful interaction came during the “Dingaling Island” scene; Alex Gomez (The Coachman) is telling Shane Cozart (Candlewick) how he has already been sold, and tells him, “Get moving stupid!”, one little voice came out of no where and yells "He's not stupid, You’re Stupid" to more delighted chuckles from the full house audience
Wright, a student at Copper Mountain College, retired from the U.S. Navy, has been active backstage at Theatre 29 for the past five years. He said doing a children’s show with some 20 kids and four adults as a directorial debut was a challenge, “I wasn't sure if I could pull off a kids play being my first time directing, but even with all the little kid drama (Billy touched me, no I didn't) it has turned out to be one of the best experiences I have had in a very long time. What I had as a vision the cast has given a heart and soul and taken it far above my expectations.” “Pinocchio” runs Friday and Saturday nights at 7:00 pm though April 9 with a 2:30 pm Saturday Matinee April 2nd. “COME BLOW YOUR HORN” REVIEW
by Tami Roleff - Z107.7 FM
“Come Blow Your Horn, now playing at Theatre 29, hits all the right notes. Neil Simon’s first play, which takes place in the 1960s, still makes the audience laugh as they follow 21-year-old Buddy Baker, played by Theatre 29 newcomer Randall Lott, as he who moves out from under his parents’ control and in to the apartment of his swinging older brother Alan, portrayed by Greg Crabill. Under the direction of Theatre 29 veteran director Butch Pelfry, the cast performs splendidly. Lott as the young Buddy morphs from an innocent and responsible son to a flamboyant swinger, while Alan realizes he wants more from life than sex and parties. K.W. Heckart is wonderful as Mr. Baker, who is by turns dismayed and angry over his sons’ defection from the family business. Melissa Phelps as Peggy, the young bombshell, and Janet Peercy as the woman you bring home to mother, are both beautiful in their roles. But it’s Judy Andreshak as Mrs. Baker who brings down the house in her show-stopping scene in the second act. It’s her finest performance ever at Theatre 29. Rounding out the cast is Mary Phelps as the surprise visitor. The set design and costumes are also pitch perfect, down to the tiniest detail. Come Blow Your Horn is light-hearted, comical, and a delight. Performances are 7:00 Fridays and Saturdays through February 12, with a 7:00 Thursday show January 27 and a 2:30 matinee Sunday, February 6. Tickets are $12, $10, and $8 and are available by calling the Theatre 29 box office at 760-361-4151 or online at theatre29.com.
“Come Blow Your Horn” opens at Theatre 29
Opening their 2011 season, the delightful Broadway comedy, “Come Blow your Horn”, the first play ever written by prolific playwright Neil Simon, opened January 14 for a five week run at Theatre 29 in Twentynine Palms. Theatre 29 is the only theater organization in the Hi or Lo-Desert that offers a full year-round performance schedule. This year they have planned two Broadway Musicals, a farce, two comedies, a children’s show and a spectacular Halloween haunt experience.
“Come Blow Your Horn” runs Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:00 p.m. through February 12. A Thursday performance will be held at 7:00 p.m. January 27, and a Sunday matinee at 2:30 p.m. February 6.
Director Butch Pelfrey, a Theatre 29 Veteran, says audiences will be delighted with the precise comedic timing, 60s period sets and costumes, and excellent performances by the show’s cast.
Will mother find a pencil, will Peggy learn to ski, and will Connie say yes? What does the owner of a waxed fruit business have to do with a revolution in China? Will Buddy learn to speak "nicely" to his father? Is Mr. Manheim really dead? Who is the mysterious "visitor" and what does she want? Pelfrey says these are some of the questions that will be answered with audience laughter during the show.
“Come Blow Your Horn” follows Alan and Buddy Baker, brothers who have decided to leave the family business and experience the “good life”. One brother is a ladies man, the other a 21 year-old virgin. Add a mother trying to reconcile the situation and the scene is set for a hysterical romp in Neil Simon’s first and arguably his finest Comedy.
